Props and Costumes

I first began making props and costumes for amateur movies as a teenager. I began to do this at a more serious level around 2001 when I constructed my first full size operational Dalek prop. To be honest, my first attempt wasn't very accurate to the screen used 'Doctor Who' BBC props but building it was a valuable learning experience. I followed that first Dalek build with the much more accurate and superior quality build shown here.

Half way through the build. Awaiting paint and hemispheres. Finished Dalek prop, named L.T after a sporting hero!A change of colour scheme and eyestalk for L.T as he takes part in filming for 'Trial of Davros'

The dalek was created using plans obtained from the Internet and was built using some of the techniques and skills I acquired whilst studying sculpture as part of my fine art degree at Sunderland university. The materials used in the construction are glassfibre, wood, aluminium and plastics.

What do you do with a full size working Dalek once you've built it? I didn't ask myself this question until I had finished the build. One area where the Dalek has been used to good effect in the field of charity work, appearing at various events to help raise money for good causes. It was as a result of owning the Dalek that I became involved with the Hyde Fundraisers.

Inspired by the work done by the Fundraisers I was keen to get more involved and soon found myself working on more costumes which would be utilised by the group.
